Confirmation

Along with Baptism and the Eucharist goes Confirmation. The beginnings of the life of faith (Baptism) and the nourishing of that life in the Eucharist are now confirmed in this Sacrament. Whereas up to now parents and godparents have made decisions and promises on the child’s behalf, now the young adult makes those same promises and decisions themselves, before the Archbishop.

The feast of Pentecost (Whitsun) commemorates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon Our Lady and the Apostles. Thus was their faith strengthen and confirmed for the life ahead of them. So to at Confirmation, that same Holy Spirit is present with each candidate as the Archbishop lays hands on them saying ‘receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit’. Thus they too are blessed and strengthen to lead lives pleasing to God as members of the Catholic Church. This signifies not only a wonderful blessing but also a great commitment by each candidate to first and foremost be a good practicing Catholic.

Confirmation takes place in a parish when the Archbishop is able to attend and celebrate the sacrament. You will be informed about this and the necessary preparations that need to be made through the Parish Newsletter.
